Current Events (Final Written Project) 
Purpose: Students will inform the audience about how a current event topic has affected, or is affecting the world today. Students will write a 3 (typed) to 5 (hand written) page report telling the reader about the background/history of their topic, how it relates to current events (affects us today), and why this topic interests them/their opinion or feelings on the topic. All sources are to be listed using MLA formatting.

Approaching Standard

Student includes a brief opinion about his/her article. The opinion is backed up using some facts in the article, prior knowledge, or personal connections. He/She has a satisfactory understanding of the issue/topic.
Meets Standard

Student describes his/her opinion about the article. The opinion is backed up using facts from the article, prior knowledge, and making personal connections. He/She has a good understanding of the issue/topic.
Exceeds Standard

Student confidently describes his/her opinion about the article. The opinion is backed up using numerous facts from the article, prior knowledge, and personal connections. He/She has an excellent understanding of the issue/topic.
Citation

Not Meeting Standard

Student has failed to list all sources used in any way.
Approaching Standard

Student has listed sources used, but has give insufficient information, or used incorrect formatting, making it difficult for a reader to check, or find more information.
Meets Standard

Student has listed all sources used using footnotes, or by citing in the text, and a citations page is present. However, there are minor problems with formatting.
Exceeds Standard

Student has listed all sources used using footnotes, or by citing in the text, and a citations page is present. All information is presented in correct MLA format.
Effort/Neatness

Not Meeting Standard

Student work is 3-4 days late, untidy, shows little understanding of formatting, or does not address more than 2 items.
Approaching Standard

Student work is easy to read, but not formatted correctly, 1-2 days late, or is missing 1-2 items.
Meets Standard

Student work in neat, on-time, shows understanding of formatting, and contains all required items.
Exceeds Standard

Student work is neat, on-time, formatted correctly, and contains all required items.
