Approaching Standard

Introduces the topic clearly, but does not use an interesting strategy for beginning an essay, and may preview what is to follow, but not in a coherent and organized manner.
Far Below Standard

Introduces the topic in an elementary way (I am going to tell you about...), and/or does not preview what is to follow, which causes confusion for the reader.
Support/Evidence

Exceeding Standard

Develops viewpoint and opposing viewpoint fairly and thorougly, supplying the most relevant (4+) evidence for each while pointing out the strengths and limitations of both in a manner that anticipates the audience's knowledge level, concerns, values, and possible biases.
Meeting Standard

Supports viewpoint with logical reasoning and relevant evidence, uses at least 3 accurate, credible sources and demonstrates an understanding of the topic.
Approaching Standard

Supports viewpoint with some relevant evidence, uses less than 3 sources which may or may not be credible and does not demonstrate a full understanding of the topic.

Does not support viewpoint with any evidence.
