Grade 3-4 Social Studies Research Project 
This rubric is in support of the students first research project for SS. This was used for a 3/4 split class in Alberta for researching First Nations and the 4 countries. Students were given choice as to their 5 areas they wanted to research. They had research teams, but had to do their own research. They created a nonfiction book when they were completed.

Level 1

Student did inadequate research.
Misuse of class time.
Level 2

Student did some research but most information is not in their own words.
Information is considered general knowledge with only some supporting evidence.
Occasional misuse of research periods.
Level 3

There is evidence that the student researched their 5 chosen subtopics in their notebook.
Student has a minimum of 5 supporting details for each subtopic.
On task for research periods
Level 4

Student did significant research and may have gone beyond their 5 subtopics.
Student has more than the minimum of 5 supporting details to ensure they have all important information.
On task for research periods and group work.
Facts and Understanding

In their book

Level 1

Student displays very few facts, or mostly incorrect facts.
Very few or no examples.
Categories missing.
Level 2

Student displays facts, mostly correct.
Gave a couple examples throughout.
Includes 1-2 supporting details in each category.
Some categories are missing.
Level 3

Student displays correct facts. The provide examples where appropriate.
All categories present (minimum 5 for a group of 2, 6 for a group of 3)
Includes a minimum of 5 supporting details in each category, leaving out information that is not relevant.
Student attempted to write in their own words.
Student shows a clear understanding of topic.
Level 4

Student displays a variety of correct facts with appropriate examples.
Includes 5+ supporting details in each category, making sure they have all of the important main ideas.

Written entirely in their own words.
Student demonstrates a deep understanding of their project.

Project has little or no punctuation or spelling.
Little organization of ideas.

Project has some correct spelling and punctuation.

Level 3

Project uses mostly correct spelling and punctuation. Writing style makes topic and/or opinion understandable.

Student has no errors in spelling or punctuation. Writing style adds to the understanding of the topic and/or material. Excellent organization lends to critical focus. Strong sentence fluency. Strong word choice.
Text Features

Website layout is cluttered or unorganized.

Level 3

Student has title page that is easy to read with authors names
Table of contents is organized with correct page numbers.
Each page includes page numbers and the students name that worked on the page.
Pictures match the content on the page.
Introduction has a brief overview of what readers can expect to learn.
Glossary has appropriate words for the topic.
Level 4

All required text features are present and they added extra details for visual interest and appeal.
It is clear the students thought about and organized the table of contents in a way that makes sense.
Each page includes category headings in bold.
Pictures have captions or labels.
Introduction introduces what will be learned, but also tries to capture the reader's attention.
Glossary has all words that the student did not understand with additional words for young
