9th grade Persuasive Essay Rubric
	Poor 0 1 pts	Fair 3 1 pts	Excellent 5 1 pts
Arguments	Poor 0 The student lists reasons but does not back up with facts or other support.	Fair 3 The student uses some facts to support the argument, but they are not used the entire time. The facts are disputed and may not be accurate.	Excellent 5 The student bases all their arguments on reliable facts that they have validated with examples.
Organization	Poor 0 The student does not have the 5 paragraphs that were part of the directions.	Fair 3 The student has the 5 paragraphs, but the student did not follow the order from their thesis statement.	Excellent 5 The student has used 5 short paragraphs: P1-introduce his or her position on a topic Body-give three arguments/reasons to back up their position. P5-Sum up their main position on topic and call to action.
Introduction Paragraph	Poor 0 The student used a thesis statement that is unclear or does not include 3 complete specifics.	Fair 3 The student attempted a thesis statement, but there were mistakes in writing it. The student did not follow directions when writing the introduction paragraph or have a broad to narrow structure.	Excellent 5 The student had a complete introduction ending with a well-constructed thesis stating four main reasons.
Conclusion Paragraph	Poor 0 The student did not use the main idea to bring their paper to a close. There was no thesis statement at the beginning of the conclusion.	Fair 3 The student used the main idea to end the paper and restated the thesis, but did not restate the ideas clearly.	Excellent 5 The student restated the thesis, showed good narrow to broad organization, and had a creative and original ending.
MLA format	Poor 0 MLA formatting was not used.	Fair 3 MLA format is partially used.	Excellent 5 MLA format is followed through the use of the proper font, font size, margins and double spacing.
