Select and use appropriate terminology when discussing mathematical concepts and ideas. Process Standard 4: Connections 1. Apply mathematical strategies to solve problems that arise from other disciplines and the real world. Grade 8 PASS: Standard 2: Number Sense and Operation – The student will use numbers and number relationships to solve a variety of problems; 1. 2 pts

Statements contain pertinent information applicable to the use of scientific notation in a real-world setting.

Excellent

All three "facts" detail the accurate use of scientific notation in a real-world setting. The "fib" is not obvious.
Good

There is only one minor error in 1-2 of the facts; other than that, all three "facts" detail the accurate use of scientific notation in a real-world setting. The "fib" is not obvious.
Satisfactory

There is only major error in 1 of the facts; other than that, all three "facts" detail the accurate use of scientific notation in a real-world setting. The "fib" is not obvious.
Poor

There is a major error in 1-2 of the facts; other than that, all three "facts" detail the accurate use of scientific notation in a real-world setting. The "fib" is not obvious.
Unsatisfactory

There are major errors in all three facts.
Instructional Effectiveness
2 pts

Viewers can see the relationship between very large numbers and scientific notation with positive exponents and between very small numbers with negative exponents.

Excellent

There are at least 6 accurate conversion examples using both positive and negative exponents.
Good

There are 4-5 accurate conversion examples using both positive and negative exponents.
Satisfactory

There are 2-3 accurate conversion examples using both positive and negative exponents.
Poor

There are 1-2 accurate conversion examples using both positive and negative exponents.
Unsatisfactory

There are no accurate conversion examples and/or the examples used contain errors.
Presentation
2 pts

The artifact is neat and easy to read. Viewers want to examine the artifact based on how it appears.

Excellent

Information is neatly typed in Microsoft PowerPoint and set up to be viewed as a slide show with one statement per slide. Images that add meaning or context to the statements are included. Slides look neat and well-organized.
Good

Information is neatly typed in Microsoft PowerPoint and set up to be viewed as a slide show with one statement per slide. Images that add meaning or context to the statements are included.
Satisfactory

Information is neatly typed and affixed to index cards. One statement is included per card. Images that add meaning or context to the statements are include.
Poor

Information is neatly written on index cards. One statement is included per card. Images that add meaning or context to the statements are include.
Unsatisfactory

Information is difficult to read or is submitted on a plain sheet of paper.
Paper/Process
2 pts

Paper with definitions, examples, and process.

Excellent

300-400 word typed paper contains a student-friendly definition of scientific notation along with 4 or more accurate conversion examples (standard to scientific and vice versa) using both positive and negative exponents.
Good

300-400 word written paper contains a student-friendly definition of scientific notation along with 4 or more accurate conversion examples (standard to scientific and vice versa) using both positive and negative exponents. Must be legible.
Satisfactory

Fewer than 300- or more than 400-word typed paper contains a student-friendly definition of scientific notation along with 3 accurate conversion examples (standard to scientific and vice versa) using both positive and negative exponents.
Poor

Fewer than 300- or more than 400-word written paper contains a student-friendly definition of scientific notation along with 3 accurate conversion examples (standard to scientific and vice versa) using both positive and negative exponents. Must be legible.
Unsatisfactory

Fewer than 300- or more than 400-word written paper missing a student-friendly definition of scientific notation and having fewer than 3 accurate conversion examples (standard to scientific and vice versa) using both positive and negative exponents. Must be legible.
References
2 pts

A reference (website, magazine, etc) is provided for each image and fact.

Excellent

All image and information references are typed in MLA format and provided on a separate sheet of paper.
Good

All image and information references are in MLA format and provided on a separate sheet of paper.
Satisfactory

Image and information references are in MLA format and provided on a separate sheet of paper. There are 3-5 minor errors in that information is missing, or the format is wrong.
