Basic
There is some separation between notes but no consistency is established; student is able to fix most errors with teacher direction.
Proficient
Most of the notes are clearly articulated with a "dah" sound (rather than a "TUT" sound or simply oozing into the note by blowing only). Student is able to fix articulation matters with teacher intervention.

Novice
Minimal air is provided resulting in a 'fuzzy' or unsupported sound. It is difficult to identify what instrument is being played by the sound.
Basic
A weak air stream is supplied, tone is 'fuzzy' due to underdevelopment of air stream and embouchure. Sound may be recognizable as a musical instrument.
