Novice
The student is absent more than present.
Basic
The student is absent on a regular basis.
Proficient
The student is absent occasionally.
Advanced
The student has perfect or near-perfect attendance.
Posture/Playing Position
Novice
There is no demonstration of any knowledge of proper posture and correct playing position.
Basic
Proper posture and playing positions are attempted but not consistent. The student does adjust and fix with teacher assistance.
Proficient
Proper posture and playing positions are demonstrated but still need strength building endurance.
Advanced
Excellent posture supports all concepts of a successful performer (an unobstructed air stream; correct positioning of all parts of the instrument; ease of fluid technique)
Air Support/Sound/Tone
Novice
Minimal air is provided resulting in a 'fuzzy' or unsupported sound. It is difficult to identify what instrument is being played by the sound.
Basic
A weak air stream is supplied, tone is 'fuzzy' due to underdevelopment of air stream and embouchure. Sound may be recognizable as a musical instrument.
Proficient
A developing focused tone is supported by a solid consistent air stream. Instrument voice can be easily deciphered.
Advanced
A focused tone specific to the the instrument is demonstrated through a trained and developed air stream supported from the diaphragm.
Embouchure
Novice
The student is not using the correct embouchure.
Basic
The student has mouth in correct position, but muscles are underdeveloped.
Proficient
Embouchure is correctly formed and strengthening.
Advanced
Embouchure is correctly formed, is strong and demonstrates excellent endurance.
Articulation
Novice
There is no separation between notes; the tongue is not being used. Student is unable to correct these with teacher direction.
Basic
There is some separation between notes but no consistency is established; student is able to fix these errors with teacher direction.
Proficient
Most of the notes are clearly articulated with a "dah" sound (rather than a "TUT" sound or simply oozing into the note by blowing only). Student is able to fix articulation matters with teacher intervention.
Advanced
Tonguing is accurate for entire selection.
Rhythm
Novice
A clear lack of a steady tempo is demonstrated. As a result, the student is unable to interpret/execute rhythms accurately.
Basic
Student is able to perform with a steady beat a portion of the time with teacher direction. Rhythms are attempted but are still inaccurate.
Proficient
A solid tempo is beginning to emerge and most rhythms are better executed. Student is able to fix some rhythms without teacher intervention/direction.
Advanced
All rhythms are steady and correctly executed; a consistent tempo is maintained.
Technique
Novice
Improper hand positioning and poor posture contribute to inaccuracy of note execution (as well as lack of knowledge).
Basic
Some techniques are correct, and the student is able to correct one or more with teacher direction. Posture and playing position are positively recognized.
Proficient
Most techniques are executed correctly, and student is able to fix errors without teacher intervention. Basic fingering application is incorporated along with good posture and playing position.
Advanced
Excellent posture and instrument positioning contribute to successful note execution. The student's execution of a musical line is flawlessly demonstrated by use of advanced alternative chromatic fingerings.
Musical Terms/Symbol Recognition
Novice
The student is so captivated by trying to play the right notes at the right time that no other terms or symbols are even noticed/observed.
Basic
Terms and symbols are noticed and somewhat attempted but are not controlled nor accurately executed. Improvement occurs with teacher guidance.
Proficient
Terms and symbols are attempted but are not developed. Improvement occurs with teacher guidance.
Advanced
Excellent and accurate demonstration of execution/interpretation of all terms and symbols incorporated in the music are confidently performed by the musician.
