Structure	Needs Improvement The structure of the piece is confusing and hard to follow. The ideas are unorganized and messy, confusing the reader.	Could do Better There is structure to the piece but is not entirely clear or organized.	Great Work The piece is broken up into paragraphs and the structure is appropriate, organized, and easy to follow for the most part.	Outstanding There is clear structure to the piece and organizational strategies are used in order for the reader to easily read what is being written.
Focus	Needs Improvement There is no clear focus to what is being written. The main idea is not stated and the piece does not focus on one topic and includes irrelevant information.	Could do Better The main idea is there but might be unclear or weak. There may be some unimportant information that takes away from the main idea and adds confusion.	Great Work The main idea is clear and present. Most ideas are related to the main topic with minor stray from the main focus.	Outstanding The main idea is clearly stated and all ideas in the piece are related to and strengthen the main topic.
Transitions	Needs Improvement There are no transitions present and the piece appears choppy and unconnected. With the lack of transitions, the piece is hard to follow.	Could do Better There are few transitions present with the piece seeming repetitive and not fluent.	Great Work There are a good amount of transitions present that support the flow of the piece. There may be some repetition and choppiness but overall, the transitions allow for fluency.	Outstanding There are an appropriate amount of transitions to make the piece fluent and connect well. The transitions are strong and make the piece easy to follow and pleasant to read.
Details	Needs Improvement There is a lack of details to support the main idea. There is not enough information present to inform the reader on the topic being covered.	Could do Better Minimal details are present. Details that are present may be too weak, brief, or irrelevant and not add to the main topic being covered.	Great Work Details are present and specific and add depth to the piece but could be expanded on.	Outstanding There are many specific and well chosen, relevant, details that add depth to the piece and inform the reader of the topic being covered.
