Summer Reading Summary Rubric 
Students were required to read specific novels and do a two part project for each novel. Part 1 is at least a half page summary of the novel.

Fair

Only one main event is discussed and few characters are listed, with little to no detail about them. Obvious that the student did not read or understand the material, use of a study aid evident, some ideas are not original. Major theme is mentioned.
Acceptable

Includes at least two main events. Only main characters are mentioned with little detail about them. There may be evidence of using help from a source like Sparknotes, but not plagiarized. Major theme is mentioned with little.
Good

Includes at least three main events. Main characters are described, other characters are named, but may not explore much in depth about them and their significance. Major theme is stated with some detail.
Excellent

Includes all major events in the assigned reading. Major characters are discussed showing relationships with others and importance to the work as a whole. Major theme is discussed thoroughly.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary is mostly on level with some weak areas. Word choice is limited and straightforward.
Acceptable

On grade level, but the word choice is unimaginative.
Good

On grade level, the student makes attempt with deliberate word choice, but may make some mistakes.

Virtually no errors in grammar, syntax, and spelling.
Ideas

Poor

Misses the mark completely with the purpose behind the novel and cannot make any direct connection to the world, another text, or their own life.
Fair

Makes an attempt to identify the main moral or theme of the novel, and tries to connect it.
Acceptable

Identify the central moral or theme to the novel and apply it to their life.
Good

Shows ability to connect with the text in at least one way; self, world, other text. Student can address the author's purpose for writing the novel.
Excellent

Highly imaginative and original ideas included with their summary of the novel, makes text-to-self, and/or text-to-world, and/or text-to-text connections. At least two connections.
Creativity

Poor

Nothing more than listing facts about the story.
Fair

Attempts to make the summary entertaining, fact heavy, little to no individual voice.
Acceptable

Does more than list facts, but lacks any real originality or imagination. There is a presence of voice, but it may not be very strong or consistent.
Good

Shows attention and effort to try and make their summary stand out from the rest. Student's voice comes through.
Excellent

Above and beyond expectations, showing passion for the novel. Great use of voice.
