Fails to provide an engaging exposition which that delivers background information about the character(s) or setting. Lacks major plot details or story or poem maybe confusing.

Student uses Gothic Elements via diction, symbols, plot details and other figurative devices.

Figurative devices, diction, plot details and symbols indicate student thoroughly understands the gothic genre and is able to convey this to readers.
Good

Figurative devices, diction, plot details and symbols indicate student understands the gothic genre and is able to convey this to readers.
Fair

Figurative devices, diction, plot details and symbols indicate student understands the gothic genre somewhat, but they are not able to convey this to readers or confuse them.
Poor

Student uses few if any figurative and/or sound devices. Devices used may be forced, not make sense or reflect a lack of understanding. It is difficult for the reader to detect devices if present.
