Figurative language/Word Choice	Level Four The poem includes three or more types of figurative language. The poem includes an example of metaphor. Vocabulary and word choice is vivid and creates an image.	Level Three The poem used two or more different types of figurative language throughout the poem (simile+ hyperbole). Word choice is routine and workable with some descriptive words.	Level Two The poem used only one example of figurative language (simile) in one line of the poem. Vocabulary is somewhat basic. Words are more telling than showing.	Level One The poem did not include any figurative language. Vocabulary is basic
Purpose and Originality	Level Four Poems is creative and original. It is evident that the poet put thought into their words and innovatively conveyed their ideas and emotions. Theme is well conveyed.	Level Three Poem is thoughtful and creative. A couple of phrases or ideas may be revisited, but the overall product is carefully written. Theme is conveyed.	Level Two The poem is creative, but appears to be rushed. Theme is somewhat conveyed.	Level One Poem appears to be thoughtless or rushed. Work is very repetitive and ideas are impersonal or unoriginal. Theme is not conveyed or consistent with task.
Literary Devices	Level Four The poem employs three or more poetic devices consistently throughout the poem.	Level Three The poem uses two or more poetic devices in the entire poem.	Level Two This poem uses only one poetic device.	Level One This poem uses no poetic devices
Grammar	Level Four Proper use of modern English spelling and grammar is employed consistently throughout the poem.	Level Three A couple of spelling or grammar mistakes are evident, but do not diminish the meaning of the poem.	Level Two The poet's intended meaning is muddled by several spelling or grammar errors.	Level One There are numerous spelling or grammar errors, making the poem difficult to understand.
Attractiveness	Level Four The poem is exceptionally attractive in terms of design, layout and neatness. The illustration or photo is appropriate and adds interest to the poem.	Level Three The poem is attractive in terms of design, layout and neatness. The illustration and detail is appropriate for the poem.	Level Two The poem is acceptably attractive though it may be a bit messy. The illustration is appropriate but without much detail.	Level One The poem is distractingly messy or very poorly designed. The illustration is not appropriate for the poem.
