Literary Elements Represented

The most effective movie posters are iconic, presenting the themes in the film without resorting to flat out saying what it’s about.

Exceptional (A)

The movie poster's theme is clearly identifiable by the viewer and is conveyed through creative means. The poster depicts at least three recognizable characters from the play. It includes at least one direct quotation from the play that corresponds to its visual theme.
Meets Expectations (B)

The movie poster has a recognizable theme that may be conveyed through somewhat creative means. The poster depicts three characters from the play who may or may not be readily recognizable at first glance by the viewer. It includes one quote (or partial quote) from the play although the quote may not directly relate to the poster's theme.
Fair (C)

The movie poster may have a theme although it may not be conveyed clearly or creatively to the viewer. The poster depicts fewer than three characters from the play, all of whom may not be recognizable. It may include a quote from the play, but it does not relate to any image depicted on the poster.
Below Expectations (D)

The movie poster does not have a recognizable theme even though the illustrations may be visually appealing to the viewer. The poster depicts one or two characters but they are unrecognizable or generically represented as Elizabethan-styled. It does not include a quote from the play.
Unacceptable (F)

The movie poster has no identifiable theme. No characters from the play are represented on the movie poster. There is not a quote from the play.
Content

A look or style that is consistent with the fact that this play is a Shakespearean tragedy.

Exceptional (A)

The movie poster's content makes sense in that the poster's design is in a style consistent with the play being a Shakespearean tragedy. The content may be highly symbolic in nature. The quote chosen matches the content and is powerful when combined with the poster's visual elements. The play's characters are accurately represented.
Meets Expectations (B)

The movie poster's content makes sense in that the poster's design is in a style consistent with the play being a Shakespearean tragedy. The quote adequately chosen matches the content. The play's characters are accurately represented.
Fair (C)

The movie poster's content makes sense although the poster's design may not be in a style consistent with a Shakespearean tragedy. The quote chosen matches the action. The play's characters are accurately represented.
Below Expectations (D)

The movie poster's content may make sense, but the poster's design is not in a style consistent with a Shakespearean tragedy. The quote chosen may not match up well with the poster's content. The play's characters may not be accurately represented.
Unacceptable (F)

The movie poster's content doesn't make sense and is not in a style consistent with a Shakespearean tragedy. The quote chosen does not match up well with the poster's content. The play's characters may not be accurately represented.
Visual Impact: AIDA

The acronym AIDA stands for attention, interest, design and action. It is a common technique used by designers because of its success as a basic formula for generating movie ticket sales based on the visual impact of the movie poster.

Exceptional (A)

The movie poster immediately grabs the attention of the viewer and keeps his interest through its use of creative and/or artistic elements. Its design is engaging enough to make non-fans of Shakespeare want to see the movie.
Meets Expectations (B)

The movie poster grabs the attention of the viewer through its use of creative and/or artistic elements. Its design is engaging but not flashy or provocative. It may make non-fans of Shakespeare think about going to see the movie.
Fair (C)

The movie poster somewhat grabs the attention of the viewer, although the poster itself may not be especially creative. Its design is merely flashy or provocative, not substantive. It won't make non-fans of Shakespeare want to see the movie.
Below Expectations (D)

The movie poster doesn't grab the attention of the viewer, and it is not especially creative. Its design elements lack interest. Not even fans of Shakespeare may want to see the movie based on the poster itself.
Unacceptable (F)

There is little visual impact. There is nothing that grabs the attention of the viewer, keeps his interest, or creates a desire to see the movie.
Text

The movie poster should include the title of the film, a tag line (a direct quote from the play), the director's name, names of actors or characters, and the release date. Text may also be used to highlight some other important aspect of the film if the information is indispensable.

Exceptional (A)

The movie poster includes the title of the film, a powerful tag line, the director's name, names of actors or characters, and the release date. Other text may also be used to emphasize some other important aspect of the film. Text is thoughtfully chosen; the poster says just enough to make someone want to see the movie and not a word more.
Meets Expectations (B)

The movie poster includes the title of the film, a tag line, the director's name, names of actors or characters, and the release date. Other text may also have been included although it may not have added anything of importance. Text is well chosen; the poster says enough to make someone want to see the movie.
Fair (C)

The movie poster includes the title of the film, a tag line, and may include the director's name, names of actors or characters, and the release date. Any other text included did not add anything of importance.
Below Expectations (D)

The movie poster includes the title of the film and a tag line but does not include any other information about the film.
Unacceptable (F)

The movie poster may not include the title of the film and/or a tag line.
