Reading Response Rubric
	Level 4 25 pts	Level 3 23.5 pts	Level 2 21 pts	Level 1 18 pts
Knowledge and Understanding	Level 4 Student response has at least two paragraphs with 3 or more sentences each. The response is clear and thoughtful and shows an understanding of all the story elements of the text.	Level 3 Student response has at least one paragraph with 4 or more sentences. The response is clear and thoughtful and shows an understanding of all the story elements of the text.	Level 2 Student response has at least one paragraph with 3 or more sentences. The response is somewhat clear and shows a basic understanding of the question and the text.	Level 1 Student response has a paragraph. It is unclear is the student understands either the question or what has been read in the text thus far - or both.
Supporting Evidence	Level 4 Student response has two or more examples from the text which support the ideas stated. This means either quoting the text directly or paraphrasing something a character says or does.	Level 3 Student response has at least one example from the text which supports the ideas stated. This means either quoting the text directly or paraphrasing something a character says or does.	Level 2 Student response has at least one example from the text which only partially supports the ideas stated. Student attempted to quote or paraphrase the text example.	Level 1 Student response does not have any examples from the text to support their ideas.
Language and Conventions	Level 4 Reading response is written with the proper form and use of above grade level vocabulary and sentence structure. A consistent use of grade appropriate punctuation and capitalization is demonstrated.	Level 3 Reading response is written with grade appropriate sentence structure and vocabulary. Grade appropriate puctuation and capitalization is usually demonstrated.	Level 2 Sentence structure and vocabulary is continuing to develop. Some use of grade appropriate puctuation and capitalization is demonstrated.	Level 1 Sentence structure and vocabulary is below grade level. A limited use of grade appropriate capitalization and punctuation is demonstrated.
