Summative Assessment Essay 
Students will choose a character role during the Renaissance whether it be a noble, merchant, patron, artist, or peasant and write a letter to scholars or any Renaissance figure from our readings, discussing positive and negative things that came from the Renaissance.

Introduction

The introduction should include a little bit about the character you chose to be. Students will state their position and provide a thesis statement that encompasses both the pros and cons of the Renaissance.

Poor

Student does not go into much detail about their own character and does not have a strong thesis to carry the essay.
Fair

Student provides a fair amount of background information, but goes off a little bit too much from the initial thought.
Good

Student includes some background information, states their side of the argument, but does not have a strong thesis.
Excellent

Student has plenty of background information, they also have their statements reproduced and has a strong thesis.

Paragraph Development

Body paragraphs should be considered with quality versus quantity in mind. They need to have enough reasons that support or disproves the thesis.

Poor

Not enough reasons to support the argument of the essay.
Fair

Has some reasons, but student does not go into further detail.
Good

Student makes good points, but does not tie it back into the essay or still needs another element
Excellent

Student includes plenty of reasons that align with their thesis and that seamlessly fits in with their argument.

This will focus on the spelling and grammar students use in their letter.

Student had more than six sentences and or words that need to be revised.

Student has less than four sentences and or words that needs to be revised.

Student has very few sentences they need to look at again.

How well the flow and transitions between paragraphs and within a paragraph will be decided.

Student does not have any flow or connection words that can help guide the reader.
Fair

Student has a little bit transition words and connecting sentences that create flow.
Good

Student has some transitions words which can help the essay carry on without sounding out of place. It definitely creates a flow.
Excellent

Student has great mastery over the use of transitions, of narrating as well as a good flow that adds to their writing.
