Lab Report Heading
14.3 pts

Name, Title of Experiment, Class section, Date

Meets Expectations

Neatly completed with all required components:

Name (First & Last)
Title of Experiment
Class Section (601 or 602)
Date (MM/DD/YY)

space between heading and lab report.
Approaching Expectations

Neatly written but with some missing information. There is a space between heading and lab report
Below Expectation

Incomplete heading with missing information. The heading is not neatly written and no space is found between the heading and the lab report.
Far Below Expectations

No header present.
Purpose
14.3 pts

What was this experiment about? What were you trying you discover? The question you write in this section must be specific, focusing on an exact idea. This part of the report is often called the Purpose. (What did the egg and acid solution represent? How did it relate to our studies of the human body?)

Meets Expectations

Purpose clearly explains what the experiment is about. The experimenter explains in detail what they are trying to discover and why this is important.
Approaching Expectations

Purpose is not clearly focused on what was to be discovered. It is written as a question but does not include any explanatory rationale.
Below Expectation

Purpose is vague and hard to understand. It does not relate clearly to what is being tested.
Far Below Expectations

Purpose is absent or not related to what is being tested.
Hypothesis/Expected Result
14.3 pts

This is where you make a statement saying what you thought would be the result of your experiment. This is an educated guess based on what you already know. This also needs to be specific and exact. Your experiment should have tested the hypothesis to see if it was true (proven) or not. Your hypothesis must be testable.
(What was your prediction when we set up the experiment? What support did you have or reasons for your hypothesis? Did this change over the course of your observations?)

Meets Expectations

The hypothesis is written as an If Then statement with a clear prediction of what the experiment is expected the outcome of their experiment to be.
Approaching Expectations

The hypothesis is written only as one sentence and begins with "I think..."
Below Expectation

The hypothesis is unclear and not specific. The hypothesis is not related to the experiment or is prediction something unrelated to the purpose.
Far Below Expectations

The hypothesis is missing.
Procedure
14.3 pts

This is like the directions of a recipe; it is a step by step of how to do the experiment. Someone completely unfamiliar with the subject should be able to read the procedure and be able to repeat the experiment.
(How did we set up the experiment? Be as specific as you can using exact
measurements when applicable).

Meets Expectations

Written in complete sentences with no steps missing from checklist. At least three procedure diagram is present. There is a clear explanation present of the single variable being tested. Scientific language.vocabulary is used consistently
Approaching Expectations

Written in complete sentences with no missing steps. At least two procedure diagram is present. Clear explanations are present of single variable being tested. Scientific language is used at times.
Below Expectation

Incomplete sequence with complete sentences but missing some steps. An explanation is absent that describes the single variable being tested. Scientific language is not used at all.
Far Below Expectations

Procedure is missing.
Data/Observations
14.3 pts

Observations and Data: You need to record all observations that you make during the experiment. This should be detailed descriptions of what you saw happening during the experiment. Be as specific as possible (use 5 senses when you can to describe observations) You do not tell why you think something happened, just what you observed. Changes and patterns should also be recorded. Included quantitative data as well when possible.

Meets Expectations

Well written qualitative sentences with no inferences. Quantitative data chart, graph or picture containing proper units and labels are present. Calculations clearly shown, if applicable.
Approaching Expectations

Qualitative sentences contain no inferences. Quantitative data chart, graph or picture lacks proper units or labels. Some calculations are absent or not clearly shown.
Below Expectation

Qualitative sentences contain inferences. Qualitative data chart, graph or picture is incomplete or hard to read.
Far Below Expectations

Data section is absent, qualitative sentences missing, or quantitative data is missing from a data chart, graph or picture.
Conclusion/Results
14.3 pts

What did you discover? This is where you tell if your hypothesis was correct or not and WHY you have come to that conclusion. Based this on the results of the experiment. What you have discovered? Tell about something that you learned & discuss possible mistakes that could have been made. Does this experiment lead you to any other questions?

Meets Expectations

5 -7 sentences provide clear explanation for the meaning of your data, if applicable. Specific references are made to the data both qualitative and quantitative. Includes scientific reasoning and critical thinking with analysis of the concepts being explored
Approaching Expectations

3 - 5 Sentences provide an explanation for the meaning of your data, if applicable. Some references are made to the data.Does not consistently include scientific reasoning and critical thinking.
Below Expectation

2-3 Sentences are present but provide no clear explanation of data or do not make specific references to the data. Conclusion demonstrates a surface level understanding of the the concepts being explored.
Far Below Expectations
