What Is a Habitat?

This is a habitat assessment rubric for 5th-grade students that provides guidance for determining their initial understanding of habitats.

Habitat Assessment Rubric
	No Understanding Student is unable to provide tangible knowledge of learning target 1 pts	Emerging Understanding Student provides rudimentary knowledge of learning target 2 pts	Basic Understanding Student provides basic knowledge of learning target. 3 pts	Proficient Understanding Student has complete (or near complete) understanding of learning target. 4 pts
Physical Characteristics	No Understanding Student is unable to describe any physical characteristics found in habitat.	Emerging Understanding Student can list 1-2 physical characteristics of habitat.	Basic Understanding Student can list 3-4 physical characteristics of habitat.	Proficient Understanding Student can list 4 or more physical characteristics of habitat.
Biotic Characteristics	No Understanding Student is unable to describe any biotic characteristics of habitat.	Emerging Understanding Student can list 3-5 biotic characteristics of habitat.	Basic Understanding Student can list 6-9 biotic characteristics of habitat.	Proficient Understanding Student can list 10 or more biotic characteristics of habitat.
Habitat Climate	No Understanding Student is unable describe habitat climate.	Emerging Understanding Student can describe at least 2 climate facts of habitat.	Basic Understanding Student can describe at least 3 climate facts of habitat.	Proficient Understanding Student can describe at least 4 climate facts of habitat.
Population Dynamics	No Understanding Student is unable to describe any factor that affects population growth within habitat.	Emerging Understanding Student can describe at least 1 factor that affects population growth within habitat.	Basic Understanding Student can describe at least 2-3 factors that affect population growth within habitat.	Proficient Understanding Student can describe 4 or more factors that affect population growth within habitat.
Human Impacts on Habitats	No Understanding The student cannot describe any affect of human interference within a habitat.
