Select and use appropriate terminology when discussing mathematical concepts and ideas. Process Standard 4: Connections 1. Apply mathematical strategies to solve problems that arise from other disciplines and the real world. Grade 8 PASS: Standard 2: Number Sense and Operation – The student will use numbers and number relationships to solve a variety of problems; 1. 2 pts

Collage contains pertinent information applicable to the use of scientific notation in a real-world setting.

Excellent

Image labels are typed and accurate and include both standard form and scientific notation measurements. An explanation for why the subject would be written in scientific notation is included.
Good

Image labels are typed and accurate and include both standard form and scientific notation measurements.
Satisfactory

Image labels are neat and accurate and include both standard form and scientific notation measurements.
Poor

Image labels are neat and accurate but only include either standard form or scientific notation measurements.
Unsatisfactory

Image labels are not typed/accurate include only standard form or scientific notation measurements, or none at all.
Instructional Effectiveness
2 pts

Viewers can see the relationship between very large numbers and scientific notation with positive exponents and between very small numbers with negative exponents.

Excellent

Images reflect a variety of subject matter, from very large to very small, and examples in between those extremes. Images are arranged in a logical manner (small to large, large to small, etc).
Good

Images reflect a variety of subject matter, both large and small. Images are arranged in a logical manner (small to large, large to small, etc).
Satisfactory

Images reflect a variety of subject matter, both large and small.
Poor

Images reflect a variety of subject matter, both large and small, but mostly include one or the other with little variation.
Unsatisfactory

Images reflect only large or small subject matter with no variation.
Presentation
2 pts

The collage LOOKS interesting. Viewers want to examine the artifact based on how interesting/informative the collage appears.

Excellent

18" x 24" quality posterboard. Contrasting colors and between 12 and 20 graphics/images balanced within the boundaries of the posterboard. Collage appears neither cluttered nor sparse. Text is easy to read.

18" x 24" quality posterboard. Contrasting colors and 6-8 or 24-26 graphics/images. Collage appears cluttered/sparse. Text is easy to read.
Unsatisfactory

Posterboard is smaller than 18" x 24," does not contain contrasting colors, and/or appears cluttered/sparse. Text is easy to read.
Paper/Process
2 pts

Paper with definitions, examples, and process.

Excellent

300-400 word typed paper contains a student-friendly definition of scientific notation along with 4 or more accurate conversion examples (standard to scientific and vice versa) using both positive and negative exponents.
Good

300-400 word written paper contains a student-friendly definition of scientific notation along with 4 or more accurate conversion examples (standard to scientific and vice versa) using both positive and negative exponents. Must be legible.
Satisfactory

Fewer than 300- or more than 400-word typed paper contains a student-friendly definition of scientific notation along with 3 accurate conversion examples (standard to scientific and vice versa) using both positive and negative exponents.
Poor

Fewer than 300- or more than 400-word written paper contains a student-friendly definition of scientific notation along with 3 accurate conversion examples (standard to scientific and vice versa) using both positive and negative exponents. Must be legible.
Unsatisfactory

Fewer than 300- or more than 400-word written paper missing a student-friendly definition of scientific notation and having fewer than 3 accurate conversion examples (standard to scientific and vice versa) using both positive and negative exponents. Must be legible.
