Setting	1 - Beginning Student attempts to provide setting, but is unable to provide even one correct component.	2 - Developing Student can provide 1 element of the setting.	3 - Proficient Student can provide multiple details of the setting, where and when.	4 - Skilled Student can provide multiple details of the setting and explain how the setting is important to the plot, or what happens in the story.
Character	1 - Beginning Student tries but is unable to name a character from the story. There is no description of the character.	2 - Developing Student can name one or more characters from the story, but cannot state who the main character(s) is. There is little description of the character.	3 - Proficient Student can identify and describe the main character(s) and supporting characters that are important to the story baed on evidence (thoughts, words and actions) found in the text.	4 - Skilled Student uses vivid details to identify and describe the main character(s) and supporting characters that are important to the story based on evidence (thoughts, words and actions) found in the text.
Major event	1 - Beginning Student attempts to identify a major event.	2 - Developing Student gives some details about the event but leaves out key points. Uses little evidence from the story.	3 - Proficient Student identifies key elements from the story based on evidence found in the story.	4 - Skilled Student uses vivid details to describe all the key elements from the major event based on evidence found in the story.
