Clear topic sentence	Poor Topic sentence is unclear and incorrectly placed in the paragraph.	Fair Topic sentence is somewhat clear but incorrectly placed in the paragraph OR topic sentence is too broad for the paragraph.	Good Topic sentence is clear and correctly placed in the paragraph. It reflects a paragraph-sized topic.
Supporting sentences	Poor Paragraph has one or no supporting detail sentence that relates back to the main idea.	Fair Paragraph has two supporting detail sentences that relate back to the main idea.	Good Paragraph has three of more supporting detail sentences that relate back to the main idea.
Using examples&details	Poor Paragraph has no examples or details to elaborate on the supporting sentences	Fair Paragraph has a only one example or detail to elabort on the supporting sentences	Good Paragraph has at least one example or detail for each of the three primary support detail sentences that relate back to the main idea.
Using transition words	Poor No transition words used. Ideas and topics do not flow.	Fair One transition word, but it's a poor one. Ideas flow but not smoothly.	Good Several appropriate transition words. Ideas flow logically and smoothly
