Introductory Paragraph

This paragraph introduces the essay's purpose, it includes a hook and a thorough thesis statement. Thesis statement should be ONE sentence that includes the writer's opinion along with three points details that support the opinion.

Excellent

This paragraph starts with a strong hook.
Thesis statement is clearly the point that will be proven within the essay. Thoughtful transition between the hook to the thesis.
Average

Thesis statement and/or hook are somewhat effective. Transition between the two

Thesis statement and/or hook is not very clear or effective.

Body Paragraph 1

This paragraph should include the thesis statements first main point. It must be effectively explained using specific evidence. Thorough details must be given. The writer must be specific and end with a mini-conclusion of topic.

Essay included a First Body Paragraph that stated the thesis statement. Successfully includes topic sentence and gives detailed information about detail #1, has a concluding sentence.

Paragraph is not acceptable. It does not restate thesis, summarize points made in the body paragraphs, or conclude well.
English Conventions

Punctuation, Capitalization, Consistent Point of view and verb tense.
Essay should be checked for correct spelling and punctuation. Essay should also be edited prior to being handed in.

Excellent

There are few or no errors in mechanics, usage, grammar, or spelling.
Average

There are some errors in mechanics, usage, grammar, or spelling.
