Collaborative Immigration Stories
In small groups, students will form a "family" that is emigrating from a region of their choice. They will create a portfolio that contains first person narratives from each member, photos, a list of items the family brought from their homeland, a food recipe from their homeland, and 2 maps: 1 from their origin town/country, and 1 from where they settled.

Journals

Excellent

Students included a minimum of 7 journals for each family member. The journals are historically accurate, unique, abundant in information, and accurately portray the emotional and physical experience of starting over. This could have been an entry of a real person!
Good

There are 4 to 6 good journal entries with overall correct information. The work is clear and on a few parts some information is incorrect, not understandable, or does not align with the rest of the family. Somewhat believable.
Fair

There are 3 or 4 short journal entries. The entries are too short in order to cover anything accurate or emotionally convincing per their experience. Information is mostly incorrect or not comprehensible.
Poor

There are one or two journal entries and the entries are not sufficient, not enough, or contain incorrect information.
Graphics

Excellent

Students included photos that represent the family and what they left behind. The photos are believable and accurate to the time period. Two maps are included that narrow their origin to a town and country as well as a specific town of settlement.
Good

Some good photos are included, but they may not be convincingly accurate for the period. Two maps are present, but do not narrow down the origin or settlement to a town.
Fair

One or two photos are present, but do not connect to the family or experience. Only one map is provided and may not be narrowed down to a specific location.
Poor

Photos or maps are missing from the portfolio. What is present does not add to the experience of the family.
Research

Excellent

Students included a well-researched list of items the family might have brought with them from their homeland in order start new lives. The items are reasonable and originate from the time period indicated.
Good

A short list and a recipe are provided, but the list may not consider the time period or what the immigrants might have been able to bring with them in order to start over, or the recipe may not originate from that region.
Fair

The list and recipe do not originate from the region the immigrants moved from and the list may contain items the family wouldn't consider for relocation and survival purposes.
Poor

The list or the recipe is missing and is not representative of the immigrant family.
