Identification Artist, Title, Date, Medium, Subject Matter	Excellent Correctly identifies all components of the artwork.	Good Identifies two of the components of the artwork.	Fair Only identifies one of the components of the artwork.	Poor Fails to correctly identify any components of the artwork.
Describe What do you see? Landscape, portrait, people, still, animals, religious, historic....	Excellent Draws historical connections. Clearly describes the artwork in full detail. Gives a detailed explanation of what is going on.	Good Does not draw historical connections. Describes the artwork using some details. Explains what is going on.	Fair Does not draw historical connection. Acceptably describes the artwork using few details. Does not explain what is going on.	Poor Does not draw historical connections. Gives a basic description of the artwork, but no other information.
Analyze How does the artist use the elements of art and principles of design to get your attention?	Excellent Defines the most significant elements of art, and principles of design used and explains how they were used to emphasize the point the artist is trying to convey.	Good Discusses the elements of art and principles of design used, but not how they enhance the mood of the artwork or create emphasis.	Fair Mentions one significant element of art and principle of design used here.	Poor Fails to correctly identify any of the elements of art or principles of design.
Interpret Meaning, How do you personally relate, to this piece? What does the artist want you to think about?	Excellent Explains the purpose of the work/content. Forms an educated meaning for the artwork, and attempts to relate to the piece on a personal level.	Good Explains the purpose of the work/content. Forms an educated meaning, but does not attempt to relate to the work personally.	Fair Does not identify a purpose for the work. Draws meaning from personal observervation alone rather than an educated assessment.	Poor Does not give meaning or purpose to the art work.
Judge Does the piece successfully convey it's desired meaning?	Excellent A critical personal evaluation is drawn based on careful observation, analysis and interpretation. The opinion of the critic is well defended.	Good A personal evaluation is drawn but does not seem to comply with the observation, analysis and interpretation. Needs to defend their opinion.	Fair Student simply states that he/she likes or dislikes the work. No real 'evaluation'.	Poor Fails to effectively evaluate the work of art.
