Perform safe oxyacetylene start-up and shut-down procedures

Does not start up torches with a small flame (fuel first) and work up to a working flame. Never remembers to close the tank valves.

Has an understanding of start up procedures but needs regular assistance when starting up the oxy-fuel torch.

Has a good understanding of the oxy-fuel torch start up procedures and almost always works with out assistance.

Fully understands oxy-fuel torch start up procedures and always operates within the safety rules.
Material Control and Welding

Demonstrate basic oxyacetylene welding competencies.

Material is wasted, no proper planning on materials usage. Welds are rough and not completed properly

Some materials are wasted and welds are improving

Less material wastage, welds are consistent with few minor defects.

Material usage is well thought out and welds look even and consistent.
Advanced Equipment Use

Select the correct filler rod and tip size for a given application.
Set working gas pressures to match tip.

Poor

Will not look up the reference for a tip sizing chart.
Welds are unsuccessful as the tip does not match the thickness of the weld material.
Fair

Student will change the tip if it is given to him/her. Regulator adjustment is made by the instructor.
Good

Student will ask which tip should be used and what the regulators should be set at. Student will set the regulators him/herself.
Excellent

Student researches the correct tip and regulator pressure and asks the instructor for a final check.
