Hook 10 pts Introductory paragraph holds the reader's attention.	Not at standard 5-6 points Opening paragraph simply restates the topic. The topic is unclear.	Progressing 6-7 points Opening paragraph presents cliches but it may hold some of the reader's attention. Topic is somewhat clear.	Mastery 7-8 points Opening paragraph holds the reader's attention. The topic is mostly clear, but predictable.	Exemplary 9-10 points Opening paragraph presents vivid details that immediately puts the reader into the story. It inspires curiosity. The topic is original and clear.
Organization 20 pts Sequence and smooth transitions throughout the essay.	Not at standard 10-12 points Essay shows no attempt at organization. Little or no use of linking words. Lack of unit and cohesion.	Progressing 12-15 points Essay is organized, but some paragraphs are misplaced. Transitions are not smooth. There are a few gaps between ideas. Sometimes it gets off topic.	Mastery 15-17 points Essay is fairly organized. There are some transition words and they are used appropriately. There is a sense of unity and coherence.	Exemplary 17-20 points Essay is well organized and the unity adds to the quality of the writing. Transitions are smooth and natural. Ideas are clearly displayed in a coherent sequence.
Details 20 pts Body paragraphs have a wealth of details that appeal multiple senses.	Not at standard 10-12 points Essay contains little to no detail. Essay is just a sequence of facts/events with little or no narrative structure.	Progressing 12-15 points Essay contains some detail. Some details are irrelevant or off topic.	Mastery 15-17 points Essay has specific details, but they are not vivid. The details are relevant but not enough for the reader to draw a clear picture of the story.	Exemplary 17-20 points Essay contains vivid detail which appeals to multiple senses. The details are succint, still clear and essential for the reader to picture the events. The text is original.
Voice 30 pts Evolution of the essay shows clear sense of identity and personality.	Not at standard 15-19 points Essay does not tell much about the writer. The writer's personality/identity is not shown through the words. The tone doesn't make the condidate desirable for admission.	Progressing 19-23 points Essay explains some things about the writer, but does not distinguish the writer from others. Little sense of personality/identity. The tone is bland and artificial, and it doesn't show the writer's real feelings or thoughts.	Mastery 23-27 points Writing reveals some of the writer's thoughts and feelings, but it needs more personality. The writer plays safe. The tone may present the writer as appropriate for admission.	Exemplary 27-30 points Essay clearly demonstrates how the writer is unique and separates him/her from other writers. The text is bold and risk-taking. It makes the reader want to know more about the writer's story. Tone presents the writer as appropriate for admissions.
