Writing Project Rubric

Basic writing rubric for graduate students. I'll use it when teaching Evaluation and Monitoring. The projects will be Evaluation Plans for public health programs.

Topic Coverage	Sub Standard Topic is not clearly addressed. Seemingly random thoughts. Little effort went into ensuring topic is covered.	Approaches Standard Topic is covered, but organization is a little confusing. Lacks cohesion.	Meets Standard Topic is well covered and understandable. Few questions about the topic are left unanswered.	Exceeds Standard No questions are left unanswered, topic is thoroughly covered. Topic is well-researched and evident in the writing. Attention is paid to critical details.
Citations	Sub Standard Few citations or citations are ill-placed.	Approaches Standard Citations show some research, but are limited and lack depth. No research went beyond the syllabus readings.	Meets Standard Citations are well-placed and support the writing. Some citations are beyond the syllabus.	Exceeds Standard Citations are more extensive and show research depth.
APA Format	Sub Standard Paper is not a best effort. Lacks APA formatting.	Approaches Standard APA formatting is evident, but extensive errors exist.	Meets Standard APA formatting correctly applied. Limited errors.	Exceeds Standard Everything is neat and correct. APA formatting correctly applied with no errors.
Sentence Fluency	Sub Standard Sentences are all simple and lack variety. This writing feels "robotic".	Approaches Standard Sentences are all similar in format. The writing feels choppy and does not flow well.	Meets Standard Sentences are well structured. Some vary in length and can be read with fluency.	Exceeds Standard Sentences are well built, strong with varied lengths. The writing flows well when read aloud.
Conventions	Sub Standard Errors in spelling, grammar, usage and/or punctuation make it difficult to read.	Approaches Standard Writing is readable, but shows little understanding of writing conventions. Errors in spelling, grammar, usage and/or punctuation negatively effect the quality of the paper.	Meets Standard Writing shows an understanding of writing conventions. There are limited errors in spelling, grammar, usage and/or punctuation.	Exceeds Standard Writing reflects a good grasp of standard writing conventions. There are very few errors in spelling, grammar, usage and/or punctuation.
