Rough Draft 
The rough draft will contain the introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and the concluding paragraph. The rough draft should be five pages and contain at least seven citations.

Excellent

The essay has a strong opening with an engaging attention getter and a logical progression to a strong thesis sentence. The introduction includes the title and the author and clearly connects to the rest of the paper.
Good

The introduction is functional, but not very engaging. It has an attention getter and a thesis statement. The title and author are stated.
Fair

The student attempted an introduction, but it is weak. A thesis is included, but the intro. does not grab the reader's attention, and may be too brief and/or disorganized.
Poor

The essay does not have a full introduction. Major components are missing.
Organization & Body

Excellent

Paper follows the outline with no digressions from it; paper is always on topic.
Contains three or more body paragraphs which each start with a clear & insightful claim sentence that clearly relates to the thesis. The paragraphs are logically organized, clearly structured and easy to understand.
Good

Most (75-90%) of the paper follows the outline with no critical digressions from topic.
Contains three body paragraphs which each start with a claim sentence, but may have a weak connection to the thesis. There may be some minor errors in organization and structure.
Fair

Some (50-75%) of the paper follows the outline. There are some critical digressions from topic.
Contains 2 body paragraphs which start with a topic sentence, but no clear link to the thesis is made. Organization is weak.
Poor

Very little (25-50%) of the paper follows the outline. There are many critical digressions from topic.
Fewer than 2 body paragraphs and/or paragraphs are missing topic sentences. Organization is poor and the essay is hard to follow.
Textual Evidence

Excellent

There are more than 3 quotes from the text in the paper.
Essay contains multiple quotes that offer support for the thesis. Quotes are integrated smoothly, properly punctuated and fully explained with elaboration and analysis.
Good

There are 3 quotes from the text in the paper.
Essay contains at least 2 quotes per body paragraph. Student explains each quote, but may need more analysis to fully support main points. Minor errors in punctuation may be present.
Fair

There are 2 quotes from the text in the paper.
Essay contains some quotes, but not enough to fully support the thesis, and/or the quotes are minimally explained with little or no elaboration. Errors in quote punctuation present.
Poor

There is 1 quote from the text in the paper.
Essay contains very few or no quotes. Included quotes are weak and do not add to the meaning of the essay. Quotes are not explained or don't support the main ideas.
Conclusion

Excellent

Wraps up the essay by restating the thesis, reviewing the main points, and leaving the reader thinking. The conclusion is creative and/or thoughtful.
Good

Restates thesis and main points and leaves the reader with something to think about, but could be stronger.
Fair

Ends the essay with some final thoughts, but doesn't clearly restate thesis and/or main points. Additional information may be added that was not already presented in the essay. Does not end with a memorable statement.
Poor

Essay ends abruptly or the conclusion does not fit with the essay. Major components of the conclusion may be missing.
