Retelling

Excellent

The student can retell events in a story sequentially, using appropriate details. Tells who the most important characters are in the story. Can describe the setting and the problem.
Good

The student can retell the story sequentially, possibly mixing up two minor events, but can only remember either the characters, problem or the setting.
Fair

The student can retell events, but retelling may or may not be sequential. Student may give only a partial description of the characters, setting, or problem.
In Progress

The student cannot retell many events in the story. Student has a very incomplete description of the characters, setting, or problem.
Questioning

Excellent

The student can ask a question that calls for clarification of something that might be confusing in a read-aloud. This may be a question about vocabulary or meaning. The student understands the difference between a clarifying question and a question that is based on a literal recall of the text.
Good

The student can ask a clarifying question, but the answer may have been obvious in the story. In the role of the Clarifier, instead of asking a clarifying question, the student asks a question that is based on a literal recall of the text.
Fair

The student either only knows how to ask a clarifying question or a literal question. He doesn't know the difference between the two.

The student has great difficulty formulating a question and relies on teacher support.
Predicting

Excellent

The students makes full use of the front/back covers, illustrations and prior knowledge. Predictions are logical and makes use of phrases "I'll bet..." or I think..." ect.
Good

The student predicts based on his own experiences, not drawing directly from the text, cover, and illustrations.
Fair

The student can make limited predictions based on front/back cover and illustrations. Displays limited use of prior knowledge and words like "I think " or "I predict".
In Progress

The student cannot make a logical prediction based on fron/back cover, illustrations. Does not use prior knowledge of the subject.
Clarifying

Excellent

The students identifies words that are difficult to read and pronounce. Uses phrases like, "I don't understand the part about...." Makes an effort to think about the word in context.
Good

The student gets easily frustruated by words he doesn't know, but he asks student peers for help. He uses phrases like "I don't get it" and "Help", etc.
Fair

The students realizes he/she has difficulty with certain words but appeals only to the teacher for clarification instead using clarification strategies like reading and looking for clues.
In Progress

The students makes very little effort to identify difficult words and seems to be unaware of any clarifying strategies that might help him/her.
