Choose one essay written by a man from the Romantic Period of the American West as a frame, and by noting its main ideas, use those ideas through which to analyze another essay of the same period written by a woman (the case essay). Use one quote from each essay on which to build your thesis.

Two quotes are used, though roughly explained in relation to thesis. The student understands the essays, has established a point, and can explain the ideas clearly.
Fair

Quotes are used in their entirety rather than partially with explanation of their meaning. Structure of essay is clunky. Ideas are incomplete in their explanation.
Poor

The student does not understand each essay, let alone can create a thesis in his/her paper.

Excellent

Thesis is clear and well-written, either explicitly or implicitly. Structure is logical; formal diction. Sentence fluency. Relevant support and explanation. Transitions are solid, linking the examples.
Good

Thesis is present and fits the technical aspects of either a dynamic or integrated thesis (Assumption/Denial, or Conditional), but the message of the thesis is somewhat ambivalent. Diction is more casual, though the student obviously understands and can explain his/her point.
Fair

Thesis is present but is too broad and vague.
Poor

Thesis is not present or is unclear.

Mechanics, Spelling, Punctuation

Excellent

Essay contains 2-3 errors in a three-page paper.
Good

Essay contains 3-4 errors.
Fair

The essay contains 5 errors.
Poor

More than 5 errors, which distract from the readability of the essay.

Credit quotes and references. Parenthetical citations correct.

Excellent

Student uses correct format in Works Cited page and parenthetical citations.
Good

Essay contains two technical errors in the Works Cited or parenthetical citations, but they are not distracting to the reader.
Fair

Student does not understand when or how to cite information, nor how to paraphrase information.
Poor

There are no references in the student essay or no Works Cited page.
