	Excellent Reader understands and easily follows the writer’s expression of ideas. 4 pts	Good Reader understands<BR> writer’s ideas. 3 pts	Fair Reader occasionally has<BR> difficulty understanding<BR> or following the writer’s ideas. 2 pts	Poor Reader has difficulty identifying or following the writer’s ideas. 1 pts
Response to Prompt	Excellent Presents a clearly focused main idea that addresses assigned topic.	Good Uses the assigned topic to establish a main idea. Thesis statement may be weak.	Fair Addresses the assigned topic, though the focus may shift.	Poor Attempts to address assigned topic but with little or no success in establishing a focus.
Development & Details	Excellent Achieves coherent development with many specific and relevant details and examples	Good Has focused but occasionally uneven development; incorporates some specific details and examples	Fair Has some development but lacks specific details; shows too many, repetitative phrases or generalizations.	Poor Demonstrates little development; usually lacks details or examples or presents irrelevant information.
