Socratic Seminar

The purpose of a Socratic Seminar is to achieve a deeper understanding about the ideas and values in a text. In a Seminar, participants systematically question and examine issues and principles related to a particular content, and articulat different points-of-view. The group conversation assists participants in constructing meaning through disciplined analysis, interpretation, listening, and participation.

Able to locate evidence in support of an idea under discussion. Occasionally refers to another's point. Attempts to explain ideas. May initiate a new idea.	Developing Shows little evidence of knowledge regarding the text. Presents unexplained ideas. Becomes involved sporadically.	Beginning No evidence of knowledge regarding the text. Shows no interest in the text and unprepared to analyze or reason. Speaks off topic.
Discussion Skills	Exemplary Speaks loudly and clearly. Builds on another's point of view. Explains ideas thoroughly. Speaks directly to other students rather than the teacher.
