Upper and lower case letters are used correctly. Capital letters almost always mark the beginning of a sentence. "I" is always capitalized. Proper nouns are inconsistent.

Sentence beginnings and proper nouns are usually correctly capitalized. All upper and lower case letters are correctly used.
Ending Punctuation

Developing

The writing has no ending punctuation at all or is completely incorrect.
Approaching

The writing has inconsistent or sometimes incorrect ending punctuation.
Partial Proficient

Ending punctuation is mostly, but not completely correct.
Proficient

The writer correctly uses more than one type of ending punctuation and punctuation is always correct.
Grammar

Developing

Words as a whole do not make sense or complete a thought and inproper sentence structure.
Approaching

Attempted sentence use with inconsistent use of proper word sequence.
Partial Proficient

Correct use of sentences and correct word sequence is mostly correct and proper.
Proficient

Correct use of sentences and correct word sequence is used properly.
