This rubric is designed to assess the Grade 1 Language Conventions portion of a student's writing. This rubric does not include ideas and content, organization, or style. These topics will be addressed in an additional rubric.

	Developing 1 pts	Approaching 2 pts	Partial Proficient 3 pts	Proficient 4 pts
Spelling	Developing Spelling is pre-phonetic and written in letter strings	Approaching Spelling is partially phonetic, with many middle or vowel sounds missing	Partial Proficient Spelling is phonetic and readable to the untrained eye	Proficient Spelling is correct on word wall words and previous Spelling words and close on high-frequency words
Capital Letters	Developing Use of upper and lower case letters appears to be random	Approaching Use of upper and lower case is mostly correct. Some sentences may begin with capital letters. "I" is inconsistently capitalized.	Partial Proficient Upper and lower case letters are used correctly. Capital letters almost always mark the beginning of a sentence. "I" is always capitalized. Proper nouns are inconsistent.	Proficient Sentence beginnings and proper nouns are usually correctly capitalized. All upper and lower case letters are correctly used.
Ending Punctuation	Developing The writing has no ending punctuation at all or is completely incorrect.	Approaching The writing has inconsistent or sometimes incorrect ending punctuation.	Partial Proficient Ending punctuation is mostly, but not completely correct.	Proficient The writer correctly uses more than one type of ending punctuation and punctuation is always correct.
Grammar	Developing Words as a whole do not make sense or complete a thought and inproper sentence structure.	Approaching Attempted sentence use with inconsistent use of proper word sequence.	Partial Proficient Correct use of sentences and correct word sequence is mostly correct and proper.	Proficient Correct use of sentences and correct word sequence is used properly.
