Culinary History/Influential Chef
This assignment is about finding a connection between culinary history and yourself. You might be researching an influential chef such as Escoffier, Point, Bocuse, or Taillevent, or trying to understand Catherine de Medici, or trying to trace the lineage of the first restaurant. This is about creating a connection and finding meaning. When you have finished this project ask one question of yourself, “after reading this do I want to learn more about this person or event?”

Introduction and Conclusion
20 %

Introduce us to the topic and give us a reason to read it.

Level 1

Cut and paste, no effort.
Level 2

Simply introducing the topic, no style, more than likely cut-and-paste.
Level 3

You introduce the topic and have given us a reason to read further.
Why?
25 %

Why should we continue, do you find value in the subject, if not why?

Level 1

Short list or bullet points, no personal interest, information that can be gathered by a basic search.
Level 2

Cut-and-paste with a little bit of style. Halfhearted attempt to add a personal connection, no passion towards the project, no recognition of the cultural importance. You probably only eat fast food.
Level 3

The work contains all of the typical content, however, the student has found a rabbit hole and pursued it discovering bits of information that bring the subject to life. There is passion and excitement in the work leaving the viewer with the desire to learn more.
Essence, What creates importance?
25 %

Why others think its important, or what is unique about the chef

Level 1

No mention of why it's important or why somebody would consider it important. It's a sterile document that seems to take from the reader instead of giving.
Level 2

The author/creator makes an attempt to build importance by using different media to present the material. The work still reeks of cut-and-paste but there is an effort.
Level 3

The author/creator has put real thought into creating a document that utilizes different media to express what they feel is important. It could be videos, recipes, or a cooking demonstration. The presentation has passion and exuberance that demonstrates a true connection with the subject.
Your connection,
10 %

Everybody has a story find it and relate to it

Level 1

Nothing personal it is simply another assignment. The attitude of "what do I need to do to get a grade?" Is evident.
Level 2

An acknowledgment that the author has found something pertinent and somewhat rewarding. However the work lacks follow-through and a sense of importance from the author.
Level 3

The connection is obvious and the author apparently has become an acolyte or an advocate for the subject. There is real excitement and a desire to take the learning further.
Construction, original or not
20 %

If you are going to use cut and paste at least try to hide it

Level 1

The construction is haphazard, basic cut-and-paste, no real continuity and no effort in creating a cohesive presentation.
Level 2

A decent presentation, could be PowerPoint or one of the other medias available on the Internet. There was some thought into putting this together however it still barely exceeds cut-and-paste.
Level 3

The enthusiasm of the presentation and the quality of the content presented renders a grammatical evaluation unnecessary. This is because they simply do not exist in quality work. The creators enthusiasm for the subject and the information he/she found outshines everything else.
