Tone uses words that helps the reader communicate emotion and feeling	Poor The writing has no discernible tone and lacks emotion and feeling.	Fair A discernible tone is detected, but needs more development. More emotions needs to shine through.	Average The tone is becoming more developed, but it continues to lack emotion and feeling.	Good The tone is stronger, and the emotion is solid.	Excellent The tone is at its strongest, and the emotion is conveyed effectively.
Connection uses words that connect the text to the intended audience	Poor The writing shows no attempt of connecting with the reader in any way and doesn't establish an intended audience	Fair The connection is developing between the writing and the intended audience, but it isn't quite there yet.	Average The writing shows connection with the audience, but it isn't a strong connection. Strengthen the connection by pinpointing a specific audience.	Good There is a fairly strong connection built between the writer and the audience.	Excellent The audience the writing is intended for is clear. The connection between the writer and the audience is sturdy.
Purposiveness uses words that establish a purpose and help the reader understand said purpose	Poor The writing shows no overall purpose and no understanding of what audience it is intended for.	Fair The writing is starting to have a purpose, but it isn't clear what the purpose is yet. Clear up your ideas and communicate them more clearly.	Average The writing has a purpose, but it could be more developed. Communicate your purpose more effectively by fleshing out your ideas.	Good The purpose is clear and understood by the reader.	Excellent The purpose of the writing is well defined and drawn out for the reader.
Risk uses words that communicate the writer's point of view on the subject	Poor The writing lacks depth and is one dimensional. It doesn't attempt to convey the writer's point of view.	Fair There is a small amount of depth occurring, but no risks are being taken. Use more point of view, and show the reader who you are as a writer.	Average The writing shows a considerable amount of risk, but more risk could be taken. Push the boundaries!	Good The risks being taken by the writer are apparent and bold.	Excellent A gallant effort is made in taking risks to communicate the writer's point of view. Your courage is noticeable!
