Topic Sentence Organization trait	Outstanding The topic sentence is the first sentence in the paragraph. It is a clear statement of what the paragraph is about.	Satisfactory The topic sentence gives some connection to the overall content of the sentences.	Developing The topic sentence gives little evidence of a relevant topic connecting to the other sentences or there is no topic sentence.
Supporting Details Ideas trait	Outstanding Topic is supported by descriptive words that are are used to describe the topic and reach the five senses creating a picture in the reader's mind. Ideas include details not everyone would think of.	Satisfactory There are some sensory details used to describe the topic. The writing tells rather than shows the reader about the topic. Ideas make sense and include some interesting details.	Developing Very few details used. Sentences are short, choppy and do not reveal much about the topic. Topic is unclear or ideas do not make sense.
Closing Sentence Organiztion trait	Outstanding The paragraph contains a closing sentence that restates the topic in a different way.	Satisfactory Closing sentence is present, but repeats the topic sentence.	Developing No closing sentence is present.
Conventions/Spelling	Outstanding Writing evidences understanding of proper grammar and use of punctuation throughout. Minimal spelling errors.
