Main Idea/Thesis 30 %	Poor No evidence of a thesis statement: student provides a number of related ideas or points with no particular direction for expantion on the topic.	Fair There is some evidence of a thesis statement, but it is not clear. Thesis does not relate to the rest of the essay.	Good Thesis statement is somewhat clear, but could be worded better. Relates somewhat to the essay.	Excellent Thesis statement is stated clearly. The student's position is clear and easy to follow.
Supporting Details and Points 40 %	Poor A thesis statement may be evident. No supporting details or points are provided.	Fair There may be one or two supporting points: details are inadequate.	Good There are supporting points/details, though some may be missing, that support the thesis statement. Details are included, but may not fully support points.	Excellent Student uses points which support thesis statement. There are details which support the points.
Mechanics 20 %	Poor Errors are very frequent and the essay is difficult to read. (More than 10)	Fair There are several errors which distract from the overall meaning and flow of the essay.
