Beowulf Boast Individual Project and Presentation 
For use in creating a boasts c reading Beowulf. Students will use gained knowledge in Anglo-Saxon poetry to elevate their boasts in ways that would make Beowulf proud.

Good (3=90%)

Presenter has good posture, generally good audibility, limited use of filler words, demonstrates confidence, and occasionally reads from prompt cards.
Excellent (4=100%)

Presenter has excellent posture, is clear and audible throughout, exhibits considerable confidence, does not use filler words, and does not read from prompt cards.
Conventions

Needs Improvement (1=60%)

Presentation is significantly less than three minutes, boast is 10-15 lines or under, grammar is poor, and/or content is inappropriate.
Satisfactory (2=70%)

Presentation is three minutes or less, boast is 20 lines, grammar is generally acceptable, and content is mostly appropriate.
Good (3=90%)

Presentation is within allotted time of three-to-five minutes, boast is 20 lines, grammar is good, and content is appropriate.
Excellent (4=100%)

Presentation was within allotted time of three-to-five minutes, boast is 20 lines or more, grammar is excellent, and content is exceptional.
Boasting

Speak with excessive pride, self-satisfaction about one's achievements, possessions, or abilities. Include universal themes seen in heroic epics (for example, feats of strength, bravery, etc.).

Needs Improvement (1=60%)

Boast is simplistic and may address inappropriate topics. Does not contain or reference universal themes from heroic epics.
Satisfactory (2=70%)

Boast is ubiquitous and generally appropriate. May not address achievements. References some universal themes of heroic epics.
Good (3=90%)

Boast is adequate and appropriate. It addresses achievements. References universal themes from heroic epics.
Excellent (4=100%)

Boast is original and exceptional. It addresses achievements and is noticeably creative and/or original. Continually references universal themes of heroic epics.
Anglo-Saxon Poetic Elements

Kennings - metaphorical compound word or phrase (for ex: swan-road for ocean) used especially in Old English and Old Norse poetry.

Alliteration - repetition of initial consonant sounds in two or more neighboring words or syllables (for ex: "to feast his fill of the flesh of men”).

Hyperbole - extravagant exaggerations beginning with only the smallest grain of truth (for ex: "I drove five great giants into chains").

Presentation contains one or no kennings at all.

Presentation contains little or no alliteration.

Presentation contains little or no examples of hyperboles.
Satisfactory (2=70%)

Presentation contains two kennings.

Presentation contains some type of alliteration, though it may not have been entirely purposeful.

Presentation contains some hyperbole throughout.
Good (3=90%)

Presentation contains three kennings.

Presentation contains several purposeful alliterations.

Presentation contains majority of hyperbole.
Excellent (4=100%)

Presentation contains more than three kennings.

Presentation contains purposeful and continual alliterations.

The presentation is completely hyperbolized.
Creativity/Artistic Elements

Graphics/Pictures, Attractiveness, Organization of artistic hand-made design

Needs Improvement (1=60%)

Graphics do not go with the accompanying text or appear to be randomly chosen.

The visual is incomplete and/or deficient in formatting and organization of material, and/or information is confusing to the reader/viewer.
Satisfactory (2=70%)

Graphics go well with the text, but there are too few of them.

The visual is created, has substandard formatting, and generally organized information.
Good (3=90%)

Graphics go well with the text and are acceptable in number.

The visual is acceptably created, has adequate formatting, and well-organized information.
Excellent (4=100%)

Graphics excellently complement boast and there is a great number and mix of text and graphics.

The visual is originally created, hand-made, has exceptionally appealing formatting and well-organized information.
