Preparation	Poor No evidence of any reading or research.	Fair Evidence of some reading or research, which may be incomplete or scattered.	Good Clear evidence of thorough reading and research as evident in speaking points.	Excellent Clear evidence of thorough reading and research, as evident in speaking points, pronunciation of names (people and places), vocabulary usage, etc.
Comprehension	Poor No understanding of the topic or plan.	Fair Partial understanding of the topic or plan.	Good Complete but superficial understanding of the topic or plan.	Excellent Thorough and sophisticated understanding of the topic and plan as evident in contentions and research presented.
Persuasiveness	Poor Irrelevant, counterproductive, or nonexistent contributions to team's argument.	Fair Some helpful contributions to team's argument.	Good Consistently helpful contributions to team's argument.	Excellent Sophisticated argumentation contributing substantially to team's argument.
Performance	Poor No clear communication, no evidence of listening, speaker speaks too fast to understand, and debaters seem disengaged.	Fair Somewhat clear communication, some evidence of listening, speaker can somewhat be heard or understood, debaters seem somewhat interested.	Good Mostly clear communication, evidence of consistent listening, speakers speak at a pace that can be heard and understood, debaters seem interested in debate.	Excellent Consistently clear communication, evidence of consistent and thoughtful listening, speakers speak at a pace that can be clearly heard and understood, debaters show a heightened interest in the debate.
Timing	Poor Does not use speaking time wisely. Many periods of time go unused or wasted.	Fair Somewhat uses speaking time wisely.Several periods of time go unused or wasted.	Good Uses speaking time allotted. A few periods of time go unused or wasted. Some speeches may go over allotted time.	Excellent Uses speaking time wisely. All periods of time are used effectively and debaters adhere to time limits.
