Dante's Inferno Project. Contains 5 parts of the project both individual and group work is involved. This rubric covers part 1, the Summary which will be turned in individually. Each student will turn one in. Original Rubric by Sarah Moore Project ideas adapted from amphi.com

Summary of Cantos

Summarize the section of study Canto by Canto. Summaries must clearly explain the “crime and punishment” of the Circle of Hell examined. Explain the “sin” and fully describe the punishment and its appropriateness as it relates to the sin.

Poor

There is no coherency or accuracy when summarizing the cantos. Summary lacks any organization, flow, or transition from one idea to the next. Summary is between 0 to 100 words long.
Fair

There is little coherency in ideas. Transitions between ideas aren't smooth. The explanations of the cantos are inaccurate and lacking any connection between the sin and the punishment. Summary is between 100 to 300 words long.
Good

Summary lacks flow from one idea to the next. Ideas are scattered and don't connect. The Sin and punishment are not explained clearly. Lacking connection between the crime and the punishment. Summary is between 300 to 450 words long.
Perfect

Summary of the cantos are accurate and clearly summarize the crime and punishment of the circle of hell examined. The explanation of the sin is clear and the punishment as it relates to the sin is thoroughly explained.
Thesis statement is strong. There is a flow and good transition from one idea to the next.
The summary is in paragraph form. Summary is between 450-650 words long.
Characters

B. Identify all residents. This is not just a list-explain who they are and their sin/connection to Dante’s world. Remember to include mythological creatures as well.

Poor

No understanding of the characters is shown. There is no connection to Dante and no explanation or understanding of their sin or character.
Fair

Character descriptions lack comprehension and accuracy. Format is incorrect.
Good

All characters are not present in the report. Characters are lacking detail, connection to Dante, and/or their sin. Analysis of characters is slightly inaccurate. Format does not follow the bullet style format.
Perfect

Each character from the cantos are explained in full detail. A complete explanation of who the character is, their connection to Dante, and their sin is clearly explained. The characters are outlined in a way that is easy to follow and understand. Characters are outlined in bullet format with a full description of each character in paragraph style format.
Relate to Modern World

Relate the passage to the modern world. Include “modern” (post Dante) residents justifiably placed in the realm. Identify historical or fictional characters (think about the literature selections covered in literature classes) that Dante may have placed in each circle AND explain why.

Poor

Student lacks any analysis of characters from their realm of hell as they relate to modern day characters. Format is incorrect. Explanations show no signs of comprehension of the assignment.
Fair

There is very little evidence of connections between the characters in the realm of hell of those from the modern world. Explanations are inaccurate and incoherent. Format is inaccurate- not in paragraph/bullet format.
Good

Student lacks slight connection between characters in their realm of hell and characters from the modern world. Explanations are slightly unclear or inaccurate.
Perfect

Student shows full comprehension of Dante's inferno as it relates to the modern world. Student identifies historical or fictional characters that correlate to Dante's Inferno. Student clearly explains why these characters may be chosen by Dante to be in your chosen realm of hell. Clear and coherent explanation is given.

Paper is in APA style format with a title page. Proper bullets are used. 12 point font. Times New Roman. Paragraph style.
