Writing a Paragraph 
Students were instructed to write a summarizing paragraph about "Empty Sky" by Suzanne McCabe. Students were provided with a model of a paragraph which they analyzed to determine it must include topic sentence, detail sentences, and a closing sentence.

The topic sentence is located in the beginning of the paragraph and is the main idea. Topic sentence describes what the story or article is about, giving the reader a sneak-peak to the rest of the paragraph.

Topic sentence is located in the beginning of the paragraph. It supports the main idea, but does not provide a sneak-peek to the rest of the paragraph.
Level 2

Topic sentence is located in the beginning of the paragraph but does not provide the main idea of the paragraph. Reader has a difficult time understanding what the article is about.
