Attractiveness At the intermediate level the students should be able to negotiate texts with out illustrations. However, in order to create a culture of FVR the attractiveness of the book to other students should be considered.	1 Text only, no illustrations. The cover is plain or resembles a textbook. No information about the book is available on the inner dust jacket or back of the book.	2 Cover is dull in color but contains simple illustrations or abstract geometric shapes. Any illustrations are unwieldy or unnecessary. In the case of a nonfiction book diagrams are scattered and overly complex.	3 Cover is illustrated in an exciting and eye catching manner. The book is easily portable and displayable. Diagrams in a non fiction book may be accurate but insufficient.	4 Cover is illustrated in a bright and exciting manner. Summary and information is easily available by glancing at the rear cover. Cover contains celebrity endorsement or awarded prizes.
Availability Rates the ease of access to the book for both the instructor and students.	1 Book is out of print or very highly priced.	2 Book is unavailable in bookstores but may be found through an online retailer, or book is highly priced.	3 Book is common in many retail outlets and easily found through an online retailer, book is moderately priced.	4 In addition to brick and mortar and online retailer's book is easily found used and discounted. book is very low in price.
Vocabulary Rates the usefulness of the vocabulary.	1 Book contains no unified lexical set. Vocabulary is often idiomatic or slang and well above level. no repetition of keywords.	2 Book contains some unified lexical sets though not necessarily of the appropriate level. Lexis is primarily academic level and difficult for learners to internalize. Some repetition of words.	3 Lexical sets are mostly unified along similar themes. Some use of academic level words. Idiomatic language is giving an easily decipherable context. More challenging words are often repeated in increasingly natural ways of use.	4 New vocabulary can be grouped into a variety of lexical sets.
