Introduction	Excellent Very well-developed introduction. It engages the reader and creates interest. Has an engaging "hook." Contains accurate and complete information regarding the topic to be described.	Good Introduction contains background information and "hook" that engages the reader.	Average Introduction contains some background information, but it is weak and needs further development. There is a "hook", but it could use further development.	Developing Introduction is confusing. The background information is not clear and the introduction lacks an engaging "hook."	Needs work The introduction does not introduce the central theme of the essay. No "hook." Little or no background information.
Thesis Statement	Excellent Clear thesis statement that introduces the topic and makes a central point about it.	Good The thesis creates interest and is fairly well developed.	Average Thesis statement either does not give accurate and complete information about the topic, or it lacks detail.	Developing Thesis is misleading, hard to find, or does not present a compelling argument for the description.	Needs work No recognizable thesis statement.
Body Paragraphs	Excellent Each body paragraph contains a clear topic sentence that focuses each paragraph around one point. Details/examples in the body paragraphs are clear and well developed, and there are enough details to create vivid images in the reader's mind with the use of vivid/ sense language that creates a dominant impression.
