Comparative Essay 
Students are expected to write a 5 paragraph compare/contrast essay of their choice. The students were asked to choose between two essay prompt options. Option #1 In a 5 paragraph essay, compare Jane Eyre and it’s themes to the same themes in another book/movie of your choice. Option #2 In a 5 paragraph essay, compare the Jane Eyre to your own life as a coming of age story (Bildungsroman).

The student did not include details from at least 3 independent sources in their argument.

The paragraph contains at least three supporting details to the thesis/argument, but does not include details from at least 3 independent sources.

The paragraph includes an intro, supporting detail paragraphs, and a conclusion. It includes details from 3 independent sources. However, the supporting detail paragraphs do not include sufficient detail.

The paragraph has the 5 form of an introduction, 3 supporting details, and a conclusion. The student is very descriptive in each supporting detail paragraph along with ample use of details from at least 3 or more independent sources.
Punctuation and Grammar

There are many errors within the paragraph and It needs proof-reading.
Level 2 / 60-69%

There are several errors in the paragraph. The student may have revised the essay once, but missed 6-8 sentence structure, spelling, or grammatical errors.
Level 3 / 70-89%

There are a few errors in the paragraph. The student obviously proof-read the essay but may have missed 2-3 sentence structure, spelling, or grammatical errors.
Level 4 / 90-100%

There are no errors in the paragraph. The student obviously used multiple reading strategies (i.e. reading out-loud) to fix all sentence structure as well as spelling and grammar errors.
Sentence Fluency & Word Choice

Level 1 / 50-59%

The paragraph does not have strong word choice or sentence fluency. Each sentence is extremely short with non-descriptive words.
Level 2 / 60-69%

The paragraph uses elementary vocabulary and the sentences are very simple.
Level 3 / 70-89%

The paragraph has good sentence structure and word choice.
Level 4 / 90-100%

The paragraph includes strong word choice and sentence structure. Each sentence is descriptive and detailed.
