Pet Peeve Persuasive Paper
This is a rubric for a 500 word (roughly 2 page) persuasive paper for students in an English 9 class (freshmen). The goal of the paper is to present a pet peeve and explain why it is a large enough issue that people should want to actively stop it from occurring.

3 pts

Needs Improvement

Displays a beginning understanding of concepts, needs to mature.

1 pts

Formatting

How completely your paper meets the formatting and technical components of the assignment.

Meets

Paper is typed and at least 500 words. Font is size 12, double-spaced, and a professional style (ex. Times New Roman). Writing has been separated into substantial paragraphs (at least 5 sentences).
Approaches

Paper is typed or written by hand and completely legible. A professional, size 12 font has been used. Spacing is not double, word count exceeds 400 but does not reach 500, or some paragraphs transition awkwardly.
Needs Improvement

Paragraphs are incomplete, or improperly broken up into logical parts. Paper may not be typed, and is less than 400 words in length. Font is unprofessional or the wrong size.
Clarity of Argument

Can your reader determine what your issue is, and what you want to do about it. What are your reasons?

Meets

The same issue is addressed throughout the paper - argument remains consistent. Each body paragraph has a clear reason supporting the case for why the issue is a problem.
Approaches

Issue and author's argument are directly and clearly stated. Support in body paragraphs is occasionally muddled or irrelevant to argument but still attempts to express why issue being discussed is problematic.
Needs Improvement

The paper's stance on the issue discussed is never clearly stated. Supporting arguments are disjointed and do not support the goal of the paper. Unable to explain why the issue is a problem in the first place.
Key Elements

Did you include an effective hook, thesis, and call to action.

Meets

Introductory paragraph begins with a hook that both captures attention and introduced issue. Thesis states author's stance and creates the scope of the argument. Paper concludes with reasonable call to action addressing issue.
Approaches

One element is missing and another is ineffective, or two elements are ineffective. Hook may not engage reader, call to action might fall flat or be unreasonable, thesis does not connect to the rest of the paper.
Needs Improvement

Two or more elements are simply missing, or none of the three are employed effectively. The call to action would be impossible for readers to fulfill, or thesis mentions none of the reasons for the argument.
Strength of Case

How well do you develop and support your argument.

Meets

Examples are present for all main parts of the argument and are relevant to the point being made. At least 2 counter-arguments are debunked. Argument is persuasive.
Approaches

Some arguments are missing or incomplete. Examples are irrelevant or obvious counter-arguments are not addressed, or brought up but not fully refuted. Argument only partially persuades.
Needs Improvement

Paper fails to be persuasive or convince reader of author's position. No counter-arguments are addressed, or their mentioning hurts the argument. There are no examples, or they are completely unrelated.
Mechanics

Is there proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation throughout the paper?

Meets

Paper is free of grammatical errors and correct punctuation is used. Any spelling or capitalization errors do not distract or detract from quality of paper.
Approaches

Numerous grammatical, capitalization, and/or punctuation errors are present throughout the paper, and detract somewhat from the quality of the argument.
Needs Improvement

Grammatical errors run rampant, multiple sentences are difficult to read through or understand. Punctuation is erratic.
