Beginning of story	Low Student attempts to identify how the story began, but is incorrect.	Medium Student can give 1 detail from the beginning of the story, but does not state the key point.	High Student identifies key elements of the beginning of the story, including the problem or situation.
Middle of story	Low Student attempts to identify events from the middle of story, but is unable to correctly do so.	Medium Student can give 1 event from the middle of story, but leaves out the key point(s).	High Student identifies all key elements from the middle of the story including the problem.
End of story	Low Student attempts to identify events from the end of story, but is unable to do so.	Medium Student can give 1 event from the end of story, but leave out key point.	High Student identifies all key elements from the end of the story including the solution.
Setting	Low Student attempts to provide setting, but in unable to provide even one correct component.	Medium Student can provide 1 element of the setting.	High Student can provide details of the setting, where and when.
Character	Low Student tries but is unable to name a character from the story.	Medium Student can name one or more characters from the story.	High Student can identify the main character(s) and all the supporting characters that are important to the story
Character Traits	Low Student tries but is unable to name any character traits of the main character.	Medium Student can name one character trait of the main character.	High Student can name more than one character trait of the main character.
