Lead

Excellent

I wrote a beginning in which I not only set the plot or story in motion, but also hinted a the larger meaning the story would convey.
Good

I wrote a beginning in which I not only showed what was happening and where, but also gave some clues to what would later become a problem for the main character.
Fair
Overall

Excellent

I wrote a story that had tension, resolution, and realistic characters that conveyed an event or taught a lesson that could have really happened in the Colonial period.
Good

I wrote a story of an important moment. It read like a real event in history, even though it is only fiction.
Fair
Historical Fiction Concepts

Excellent

My story includes 10 accurate facts about the Colonial time period as studied in class. The facts are interwoven into my scene. My facts are varied (i.e. I have facts learned from many different areas of the period like foods, utensils, manners, etc.).
Good

The time period is mentioned in my story, but not interwoven. Story line doesn't flow very well and facts are clumped. I only have 9 historical facts or 1 is inaccurate. I use many of the same facts that are from the same categories, like food or utensils.
Fair

My story contains 7-8 facts or 2-3 are inaccurate. I only use one or two categories.
Craft: Character

Excellent

I developed character traits and emotions through what characters said and did. I developed some relations ships among characters to show why they acted and spoke as they did. I told the internal as well as the external story.
Good

I showed WHY characters did what they did by including their thinking and their responses to what happened.
Fair
Craft: Language

Excellent

I wove together precise descriptions, figurative language, and was imaginative and the language used is something that would be historically accurate like in the example "making a sound like a muffled drum." I did not use the easiest type of figurative language, I went outside my comfort area and took a risk.
Good

I used figurative language, but it could have been more imaginative. It may have been routine. I could have taken more of a risk.
Fair

The figurative language used was acceptable, but ordinary. The wording is border line and probably would not have been used in that time period.
Elaboration

Excellent

I developed realistic characters, and developed the details, action, dialogue, and internal thinking that contributed to the deeper meaning of the story.
Good

I developed characters, setting, and plot throughout my story, especially the heart of the story. To do this I used a blend of description, action, dialogue, and thinking.
Fair
Ending

Excellent

I wrote an ending that connected to what the story was really about.
Good

I wrote an ending that connected to the main part of the story. The character said, did, or realized something at the end that come from what happened in the story.
Fair
Organization

Excellent

I used paragraphs purposefully, perhaps to shoe time or setting changes, new parts of the story or to create suspense for readers. I created a sequence of events that was clear.
Good

I used paragraphs to separate different parts of time of the story and to show when a new character was speaking. Some parts of the story were longer and more developed than others.
Fair
Conventions and Editing

Excellent

I used what I knew about word families and spelling rules to help me spell and edited. I used the dictionary and spell check when needed. I made fewer than 5 errors.
Good

I made some errors, perhaps by taking risks and using interesting words or sentences. There are 5-10 grammatical, punctuation, or spelling errors.
Fair

There are 10-15 grammatical, spelling or punctuation errors.

More than 20 errors = two points
Class time/Writing Process

Excellent

Class time was used wisely. I devoted a lot of time and effort to the process (prewriting, draft, reviewing, and editing). I worked hard to make the story wonderful.
Good

I devoted sufficient time and effort to the process (prewriting, draft, reviewing, and editing). Worked and got the job done. Individual center work was focused and on task most of the time.
Fair

Class time was not used efficiently for this assignment, frequent redirection was needed. I devoted some time and effort into the writing process, but not very thorough. Does enough to get by.
