Beginning Melodic Composition 
Students will use common rhythms and simple melodic steps and skips to compose a 16 measure composition. The composition should include a C Major scale. Students should start and end the composition on Middle-C.

There starts on C but they key is not clearly defined (i.e. C, E, G are NOT used often enough to make the melody strong.) There no clear major key.
Proficient

There is a tonal center (i.e. C, E, G, C' are used often enough to make the key strong.) There is a clear major key.
Advanced

There is a strong tonal center (i.e. C, E, G, C' are used often to make the key strong.) There is a very clear major key.
Rhythms

Needs Improvment

The rhythms are too complicated or awkward to clap and do not make musical sense.
Developing

The rhythms have moments where they are awkward or too complicated to clap and needs needs more development.
Proficient

The rhythm is easy to clap. They are varied and make musical sense.
Advanced

The rhythms are varied, original and makes musical sense. The rhythm has a good flow to it and are easy to listen to in their pattern and order.
Length

Needs Improvment

Student composes 8 or less measures.
Developing

Student composes between 8-12 measures.
Proficient

Student composes between 12-15 measures.
Advanced

Students completes all 16 measures.
