Virtual Ecosystems
Students will create a virtual ecosystem with at least 2 abiotic elements, and at least 8 biotic elements (2 producers, 6 consumers). Students will use photo editing software to combine copyright free images of each element and an appropriate background into a graphic representation of the ecosystem. Each element will be labeled and include essential information about the element's role in the ecosystem.

Effort

Does Not Meet Standards

Class time was not used wisely. Little effort made based on the neatness, creativity, quality of edited images, and overall look and feel of the ecosystem.
Progressing Toward Standards

Class time was not always used wisely. Student should have put in more time and effort based on the neatness, creativity, quality of edited images, and overall look and feel of the ecosystem.
Meeting Standards

Class time was used wisely. While noticeable effort was made based on the neatness, creativity, quality of edited images, and overall look and feel of the ecosystem, student could have put forth more effort.
Exceeding Standards

Class time was used wisely. Much effort was put into learning the software based on the neatness, creativity, quality of edited images, and overall look and feel of the ecosystem.
Components

1 - Title of Ecosystem
2 - Student name
3 - Two abiotic elements
4 - Eight biotic elements (2 producers, 6 consumers)
5 - Appropriate background
6 - Label for each biotic and abiotic element
7 - Information on each biotic element's role in the ecosystem (producer, type of consumer)
8 - Diet for each consumer biotic element
9 - One interesting fact about each biotic element

Does Not Meet Standards

The ecosystem is missing a number of the required components, biotics are duplicated or too generic, and other components may be missing, incomplete or incorrect.
Progressing Toward Standards

The ecosystem contains most of the required components, but several components are missing or incomplete. Two of the biotic elements may be duplicates. The title of the ecosystem is not appropriate.
Meeting Standards

The ecosystem contains most of the required components, but one or two components are missing, biotics might be duplicates, or the title of the ecosystem is not appropriate.
Exceeding Standards

The ecosystem contains all of the required components. There are no duplicate biotic elements, and the title of the ecosystem is appropriate.
Photos Selected

Does Not Meet Standards

Several elements are not represented by photos, photos chosen are of similar species which have the same role in the ecosystem, the background photo is not appropriate for the ecosystem.
Progressing Toward Standards

One or more element are not represented by a photo, or photos are of similar species which have same role in ecosystem (blue fish/ brown fish rather than shark/flounder). Background is not appropriate for the ecosystem.
Meeting Standards

One or two elements are not represented by a photo, or 2 photos are of similar species which have same role in ecosystem (blue fish/ brown fish rather than shark/flounder). Background is appropriate for the ecosystem.
Exceeding Standards

Each required element, biotic and abiotic, is represented by an appropriate photo. Photos represent distinctly different biotic elements which have different roles in the ecosystem. The background chosen is appropriate for the ecosystem.
Appearance

Does Not Meet Standards

The ecosystem was put together sloppily with items appearing to be just slapped on. The photos are sporadic in placement and don't connect to the background.
Progressing Toward Standards

Ecosystem created with moderate effectiveness. The photos are not well integrated into the background.
Meeting Standards

The ecosystem was created with considerable effectiveness. The photos are somewhat integrated into the background.
Exceeding Standards

The ecosystem displays a high degree of effectiveness. The photos are well integrated into the background providing a cohesive picture of the ecosystem.
Content Knowledge

Does Not Meet Standards

Several elements chosen are inappropriate for the ecosystem and/or information provided for several elements is incorrect or incomplete.
Progressing Toward Standards

One or two elements chosen are inappropriate for the ecosystem and the information provided for one or two elements is incomplete or incorrect.
Meeting Standards

One or two elements chosen are inappropriate for the ecosystem chosen or the information provided for an element is incomplete or incorrect.
Exceeding Standards

All of the elements (biotic and abiotic) chosen are appropriate for the ecosystem chosen. The information and labels for each element are correct and complete.
