In this lesson, we will be drawing from observation for the purposes of establishing positive and negative space within the picture plane. Students will focus on and draw the positive and negative spaces. Students will model the Positive objects and negative space using Contour lines, and tone. Negative space does not have to be a dark black, but at least 3 different tones as well.

This lesson is based on drawing from observation where a vase with flowers is sketched. Next, a countour line is established that separates background(negative space) from vase and flowers(positive space). Once this separation is made, the background is furthur distinguished through color using a variety of optional methods using at least three colors. The positve space is to remain untouched as white paper.

Tone Separation

Separation of spece is not effectively reinforced with color. Tone extends into the positive space. Positive space is not identified and is messy with little or no white remaining. Three colors are not used in negative space and is applied poorly with no thought of design or interest.
Fair

Separation of space is barely apparent with tone inclusion of tone to negative space. Tone is extended into the positive space. Positive space is dirty and sketch lines may be visible. Minimum of three tones not used in negative space with little consideration of design.
Average

Separation of space is somewhat reinforced with color with minor mistakes of color within the positive space. Positive space is clean and untouched. At least three tones are used in negative space.
Good

Separation of space is reinforced with Tone effectively with no tone within the positive space. Positive space is clean and untouched. At least three colors are used in negative space in an interesting design.
Excellent
