Theme	Inadequate there is no attempt to develop the theme or it is unclear, simplistic, cluttered, unoriginal	Below Expectations there is an attempt to develop the theme though it is unclear or inconsistent	Meets Expectations the theme is clearly and thoughtfully developed	Exceeds Expectations the theme is clear, thoughtful, creative, and well developed
Tone	Inadequate expresses disjointed and superficial or shallow thoughts, feelings, observations about the theme/topic	Below Expectations expresses a few sound or compelling assertions and feelings about the theme/topic	Meets Expectations expresses strong thoughts and feelings about the theme/topic	Exceeds Expectations expresses intense and memorable or haunting thoughts, feelings, and attitudes about the theme/topic, which sound genuine
Voice	Inadequate unclear, indistinct, or inappropriate	Below Expectations clear and distinct, but somewhat inconsistent	Meets Expectations clear, distinct, and consistent	Exceeds Expectations clear, distinctive, consistent, forceful, and fresh
Diction	Inadequate contains mostly weak, immature, or ineffective verbs, nouns, adverbs, and adjectives	Below Expectations contains some ineffective, disconnected, or unnecessary words	Meets Expectations contains deep, effective, and mature words, but can be more fluid	Exceeds Expectations uses rich/raw appropriate words which demonstrate careful thought and precision; the piece flows
Imagery/ Figurative Language	Inadequate weak imagery riddled with cliches	Below Expectations underdeveloped or immature imagery	Meets Expectations detailed imagery which connects to the senses and functional figurative language; may be mixing metaphors	Exceeds Expectations uses provoking/moving imagery and figurative language which serves to reinforce the theme; may use an extended metaphor or "come full circle"
Language Conventions	Inadequate several major and minor errors interfere with the reader's understanding of the piece	Below Expectations few major and minor errors occasionally interfere with the reader's understanding	Meets Expectations a couple of minor errors are evident, which do not interfere with the reader's understanding; this is a solid final draft	Exceeds Expectations no errors are evident; this piece is ready for publication
