Writing is mostly clear, but sentences may lack variety. Veers toward argument or exposition rather than reflection.

Writing is clear, and author makes an effort to think through the topic in a reflective way. Sentences are varied but lack expressiveness.
Excellent

Writing is smooth, skillful, coherent. Sentences are strong, expressive, varied. Strikes a clear, reflective tone.
Mechanics & Formatting

Poor

Distracting errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization. No attempt to follow formatting guidelines or assignment.
Fair

A few errors in punctuation, grammar, spelling, and capitalization. Several errors in formatting, or appears to follow some style that is not MLA.
